High-Pressure Water Jet Cleaning Safety Tips

Blogs 0

I have seen too many tragedies caused by ignoring standards. In that extremely high-pressure environment, strict rules and regulations are really not for show, they are for saving lives. For high-pressure water jet operations, I have summarized a core set of safety guidelines.

To maximize safety in high-pressure waterjet operations, operators must adhere to “three-level safety protocol”: special personal protection, rigorous equipment inspection, and precise operational control. Specifically, you must wear a full set of professional protective gear, including a full-face protective mask, foot protection, and high-pressure protective clothing that matches the machine’s pressure rating. Before starting the equipment, be sure to carefully check the high-pressure hose and connector for signs of wear, keep an eye on the nozzle to prevent it from clogging, and perform functional testing on the spray gun trigger and foot control valve to ensure instantaneous shutdown. Stand firm while working, resist recoil, and absolutely cannot exceed the rated blasting pressure of any component. Even if you just change the nozzle during maintenance, you must strictly follow the Lock and Tag procedure. The most critical point: As long as the skin is swept by the jet, even if the wound looks like a small hole with a needle tip, it must be treated as fatal “high-pressure jet penetrating wound” and professional medical first aid must be performed immediately.

Specific Personal Protection

High-voltage protective clothing: It must be confirmed that the protective clothing is certified to your machine’s PSI grade. Usually this kind of clothing is woven with special fibers such as Dyneema, which are specially used to prevent jet punctures.

Full Face Mask: Besides being splash-proof, it’s primarily designed to handle debris and splattered mess that bounces back at high speed.

Foot protection: If the nozzle falls off your foot without your hand, your foot bones will be shattered instantly. Don’t be fooled by its sinking; this impact resistance will save your life.

Strict Equipment Inspection

Safety starts with the hardware. At pressures above 10,000 PSI, if the device fails, it is no less powerful than being hit head-on by a jet.

Hose and connector: Check the entire hose for knots, exposed wire layers, or bulging skin. The joints must be tightened and the pressure levels must match, so don’t just take a joint and make do.

Nozzle Cleaning: A clogged nozzle can create extremely dangerous back pressure. Before turning on the pump, I usually confirm that the aperture is permeable.

Functional testing: Try the spray gun and foot valve at low system pressure. They must function “dead man switch” ——with a loose hand or a raised foot, the water flow must be cut off immediately to prevent the hose from spinning out of control.

Precise Operational Control And Maintenance

Standing Posture and Recoil: The impact of recoil is quite strong. The operator must stand firmly with his legs out of the way to avoid being pushed and staggered, causing the nozzle to sweep away to him or his colleagues.

Standing Posture

Burst pressure limit: Never run equipment overpressure just to rush work. Overpressure is the main cause of instant cracking of machine parts.

Locking and Placing: Even if you only stop for a short period of maintenance or change the nozzle, you must strictly follow the LOTO procedure. Power off, pressure relief, confirm that the machine cannot be started accidentally before starting again.

Fatal Safety Warning

“The deceptive nature of tiny ”wounds: When water pierces the skin under high pressure, it penetrates directly deep into the muscle, sending bacteria and dirt in with it. Because entry wounds are often extremely small, many workers don’t think it’s a good idea to treat them as painless.

Act now: Don’t be fooled by the illusion that there is no blood or pain. This injury is a surgical emergency and may be dead inside. As soon as penetration occurs, you must be sent to the hospital immediately, and you must emphasize to the doctor that this is “high-pressure jet injury” and cannot be treated as ordinary trauma.
