Should You Power Wash Your Roof

Blogs 15

My answer is very clear: Don’t do it, especially if you have asphalt shingles. While it’s nice to flush out those unsightly dark spots, that high-pressure water flow that can easily exceed 3,000 PSI is simply destructive. This impact force is enough to wash away the protective particles on the tile surface directly. This damage is irreversible and will not only make the roof age faster, but I guarantee that it will definitely invalidate your original manufacturer’s warranty.

If you want to enhance the appearance of your house without damaging the roof, the standard truly recognized in the industry is “soft washing”. This thing uses a low-pressure spraying system with a pressure similar to that of a garden watering hose. It mainly relies on some environmentally friendly cleaning agents to kill the culprit behind the black spots ——Gloeocapsa magma, moss and lichen from the root. Choose soft washing instead of hard flushing to keep the structure of the tiles intact, don’t worry about water seeping into the attic, and don’t destroy your home’s most expensive protective layer.

High-pressure cleaning results in the loss of tile particles, while a soft wash leaves the roof clean and intact.

Why High Pressure Flushing Is A “Roof Killer”

The most common reason I’ve seen for early scrapping, aside from storm damage, is improper maintenance. A high-pressure stream of water washing an exterior wall or concrete pavement might work, but when it hits asphalt shingles, it acts like a sandblaster.

Protect the destruction of particles: The layer of fired ceramic particles on the surface of asphalt shingles is specifically used to block ultraviolet rays. Once washed away by high pressure, the tiles become brittle and curled, and even their original fire resistance is lost.

Water seepage and structural damage: The impact of the high-pressure water gun will push water directly into the cracks of the tiles, soaking through the padding and wooden base plates inside. In the end, mold will grow where you can’t see it, and even cause structural water leakage.

Grecapsa Algae

Many owners think that the black spots on the roof are just dirt or smoke. Actually, you are not facing a photosynthetic bacterium with extremely strong vitality called Grecapsa algae.

This microorganism loves roofs because it lives on limestone filler from asphalt shingles. A normal pressure gun will only wash away the surface layer you see with your naked eye. Those “roots” or spores are still there and will soon grow even more ferocious than before. Professional soft washing is more scientific because the cleaner disinfects the entire roof surface, killing these growths at their biological source. This not only washes cleaner, but also stays clean for two or three times longer than high-pressure rinses.

Professional Standard

  • Effectiveness of the agent: A precisely formulated cleaning solution that safely decomposes organic matter without violent scouring.
  • Property Protection: There is a strict “vegetation protection program” to ensure that the flushing agent does not damage your lawn and flowers.
  • Compliance & Durability: Operates exactly to American Building Materials Manufacturers Association standards. Seriously, soft washing is the only thing that will live up to the life of your roof.

What Should I Ask Before Asking Someone To Work?

Don’t just look at the quote, the lifespan of the roof is much more expensive than the price difference. I recommend asking your contractor these three key questions:

“Do you use a regular pressure washer or a professional soft wash system? ”
Expert warning: If they say to use a high-pressure machine with a “wide nozzle”, you have to be careful. That PSI pressure might still be too high for the fragile tiles.

“Will this cleaning method affect my warranty? ”

Expert reminder: Anyone who really knows the ropes knows that ARMA is clearly against high-pressure flushing. If anyone suggests high pressure flushing, they are betting on your warranty.

“What exactly are the ingredients in the cleaner? ”
Expert reminder: See if they commit to using environmentally friendly, degradable surfactants that are safe for your family, pets, and the environment.

Protect Your Investment

Returning to the question of “should or should not the roof be flushed at high pressure”, the risk is completely outweighed by the little visual feedback behind it. High-pressure flushing is only a temporary solution that treats the symptoms but not the root cause, and the consequences are endless.

If you want to preserve the life of your tiles, keep the manufacturer’s warranty, and completely dry out that moss, choosing professional soft washing is the only right path. The roof is the first line of defense in your home. You have to give it the most professional treatment so that it can safely protect you from the wind and rain for decades.
