It’s true that you can pressure-wash off old paint on your patio, but I have to warn you first that this is not a one-shot job. If not done properly, it can easily cause permanent damage to wood. I’ve found that many people think that greater water pressure is better, but that’s not the case. Excessive PSI can break the grain of the wood like a chisel, causing it to fuzz and crack. If you want to paint safely, you must never rely solely on water pressure to crack it. You must first use a high-quality chemical stripper to soften the adhesion between the paint surface and the wood board. I would recommend setting the pressure between 800 and 1200 PSI, replacing it with a 40-degree white showerhead, creating a wide fan-shaped splash, and always following the grain of the wood. Even if you are very skilled, you will have to wait at least 48 hours to dry after washing, and then do a light sanding again so that the final paint will be smooth.

Many homeowners are most likely to overestimate the resistance of wood when renovating their terraces. Once the pressure exceeds 1200 PSI, it is basically the beginning of disaster, and this damage is often irreversible. You can imagine that that concentrated column of high-pressure water is actually a sharp “water chisel” that can easily leave deep grooves in the wood board, which we call “wood gouge damage”. To make matters worse, the high pressure can also tear and tuck away tiny wood fibers, leaving the surface covered in burrs. Once the wood grain structure is broken, the stability and appearance of the terrace are completely ruined. No matter how you paint it afterwards, it will become particularly difficult and the paint surface will not be able to hold.
To paint safely, the real force should be chemical reaction, not the brute force of a water gun. If you were going to just use a pressure gun to get to “hard” those old paints, you had to keep the spray head very close to the wood, and as a result, the wood I just mentioned was damaged. The safer approach is to first apply a coat of professional chemical stripper. This thing can penetrate the paint layer and disintegrate the paint from the inside. Let it react on the surface for a while, and when the patent skin softens and bubbles, you can use the low pressure setting with fan-shaped water flow to gently flush it off. This protects the wood base and the paint removal effect is much more thorough than dry punching.

To get a professional effect, you have to change to that 40-degree “white spray head”. The fan-shaped spray area sprayed by this nozzle is large, which can evenly distribute the pressure and will not drill hard at a certain point on the wood. In addition, the movement path of the spray boom is also very particular, so don’t sweep it randomly. Remember, always swing long distances in the direction of the wood grain. If you rush sideways or pause at a certain point, you will definitely break the fibers and leave that particularly ugly mark. Keep a constant speed and distance, this is the key to removing paint without damaging the material.

High-pressure rinsing can push a lot of moisture deep into the wood, so you have to be patient and let it air dry for at least 48 hours in good weather. If you rush to paint the wood before it’s completely dry, the moisture inside won’t come out and the new paint will quickly bubble and fall off. Once the patio is completely dry, the final step must be a light sanding. Even if you’re not very careful when rinsing, the wood fibers will still stand up a little. Sanding can smooth these “burrs” and open the pores of the wood, allowing the next primer or stain to grip more firmly. This kind of dedication to detail is the biggest difference between professional renovation and amateur tinkering.
