Can You Power Wash A Bathtub

Blogs 20

It’s technically possible, but I strongly advise against trying it indoors. While the high-pressure water flow instantly washes away stubborn soap scum, hard water stains, and mold is a pleasant feeling, the average home bathroom is not designed to withstand this kind of impact. The PSI (pressure per square inch) sprayed by the pressure washer is so strong that it can easily crack delicate acrylic or fiberglass surfaces and even etch irreparable marks. To make matters worse, it will pull the caulk and grout used for your home’s leak prevention directly “uproot it”, and the drainage speed will not be able to keep up with the water output at that time. The bathroom will flood with water in an instant and the floor base will be damaged, which will be a big trouble. If you’re cleaning a durable ceramic or cast iron bathtub outdoors, that’s fine; but for deep cleaning indoors, take my word for it and switch to a professional electric rotating brush or steam cleaner.

The Price Of Excessive Pressure

The pressure gun is a real gem when it comes to washing your driveway, but using it against bathroom materials is a bit “overly”.

  • Acrylic vs. Fiberglass: This is the most common bathtub material today and is essentially reinforced plastic. High-pressure water flow can cause “etching” phenomena ——i.e., leaving surfaces covered in tiny scratches, darkening the gloss, and even creating small cracks that damage the structure.
  • Ceramics and Enamel: Even with these hard guys, if the jets are too close together, the concentrated water flow can cause the coating on the surface to crumble or come out “peeling spots”, especially on older bathtubs that are already a bit worn.

Ruining The Waterproofing

  • Flush off the caulk: Silicone or latex caulk on the sides of the tub is the only barrier that prevents water from seeping into the wall. A high-pressure water gun can strip it clean in seconds.
  • Destroy Grout: If you have tile around your tub, that high-speed water flow will flush the grout right out of the cracks in the tile. Once the seal is broken, water can get into the backboard, causing mold growth that you can’t see, and eventually rotting the floor joists or wall shelves.

Drainage Limits And Flooding Risks

The pipes in your home drain naturally by gravity and are not designed to handle the instantaneous high flow rate of a pressure washer.

  • Spill Problems: Most bathtub drains simply can’t handle the volume of water (GPM) that a pressure gun can produce per minute, and water can quickly accumulate, causing dirty water to overflow the edge of the tub.
  • Localized “flooding”: Bathroom spaces are small, and that “rebounding” spray will spray all over your drywall walls and ceiling with dirt, bacteria, and excess moisture. These places are not fully waterproofed.

The Only Exception

There is only one situation I would nod to: washing outside.

  • Material confirmation: This is only suitable for heavy cast iron bathtubs or steel plate enamel bathtubs.
  • Environmental Requirements: If you’re renovating an old-fashioned cat’s foot tub in your driveway or lawn that drains well and isn’t surrounded by water-phobic renovations, pressure washing is a great way to remove decades of age.
