How to Install a Pressure Washer Pump (Avoid Mistakes)

Blog 39

Installing the water pump of the high-pressure cleaner is nothing more than removing the old bolts and pulling out the bad pump. Then polish the rust on the main shaft of the engine, plug in the square semicircular key (positioning key), install a new pump, and tighten the mounting bolts evenly (torque is about 17 pounds-feet). But beware! If you don’t empty the air in the pipeline before pulling the engine start rope, your new water seal will be completely scrapped after 10 seconds.

Last year, I watched hundreds of do-it-yourself players destroy their brand-new replacement pumps. There are no more than two reasons: either the rusty spindle hit hard, or the final exhaust step was skipped. This practical guide is to teach you how to install the water pump at one time, so that it is watertight and full of pressure.

An Old Pump Removed From A Cleaning Machine Is Displayed, With A Shiny New Pump And A Tube Of Anti-Seize Lubricant Placed Beside It.

“A.S.A.P.” 4 step installation method

If you want to change the pump without overturning, you must not disorderly sequence. The maintenance team in our workshop has been using this “A.S.A.P.” rule to prevent all installation errors:

A- Alignment (Alignment): Make sure that the key on the spindle and the keyway of the pump body are tight.

S-shaft treatment (Shaft-Prep): thoroughly remove rust and apply anti-seize lubricant to prevent rust from getting stuck in the future.

A- Exhaust (Air-Bleed): In the case of no engine, flush the pipeline with tap water and exhaust all the deadly airbags inside.

P-pressure measurement (Pressure-Test): no nozzle is installed when starting up for the first time, so that the internal bypass valve is completely in place.

As long as you understand these four points, I can assure you that your new pump is definitely more durable than the original one.

Before you start, pull out the wire of the spark plug. As long as the hand to close to the engine spindle, power off flameout is the first principle of safety.

The First Step: Grinding Spindle (Must Be Coated With Anti-Card Agent)

Find some 400-mesh emery cloth or fine sandpaper and polish the bare engine spindle 1 over and over. The pure steel spindle will rust and expand after a long time, and the new pump will not fit in at all. Grind hard until the metal surface is shiny, and then use a rag to wipe the metal debris clean. Next, the entire shaft is thinly coated with a copper-based or silver-based anti-seize lubricant. Don’t underestimate this action, it can guarantee that in the next 5 years, your new pump will never bite on the engine block due to high temperature and moisture.

Step 2: Align The Semicircular Key

Put the small square iron block (half round key) into the groove of the main shaft of the engine. Its function is to prevent the pump from turning blindly on the shaft under extreme torque. Take the rubber hammer and tap it twice to make it flat and fit. Then, insert the new water pump into the main shaft, and pay attention to completely align the notch in the pump hub with this positioning key. Don’t hit it with a hammer! Under normal circumstances, the pump can be smoothly pushed to the end by hand. If you feel stuck, either the key position is crooked or the spindle has not been cleaned up.

Step 3: Tighten The Mounting Bolts

First, pass the 3 4 mounting bolts through the flange of the pump body and screw them into the engine block. When screwing, be sure to use the “star cross method”-twist this one a few turns, change the diagonal one a few turns, and cycle it. This allows the pump surface to be flat and neatly attached to the cylinder. Finally, use a wrench to tighten the bolts. If you have a torque wrench, set it to 17 pound-feet. Remember not to use brute force, too tight can easily crack the aluminum pump casing directly.

Pump Upgrade Guide: Axial Pump (Axial) vs 3 Piston Pump (Triplex)

Household models on the market under $400 are basically equipped with axial cam pumps. If you can upgrade to a 3 plunger pump, the life of the machine will definitely soar, but only if you check the length of the spindle first.

Our repair shop has done actual measurements: the original axial pump on a Honda GC190 engine (3/4 inch horizontal shaft) was replaced by a 3 plunger pump from a subsidiary factory.

Pump TypeLifespan (Hours)Installation ToleranceMounting Note
Axial Cam Pump60 – 100 HoursHigh (Slides on easily)Standard spacers work perfectly.
Triplex Plunger Pump300 – 500 HoursLow (Requires clean shaft)May require a 1/4″ flange spacer adapter to clear the engine block.

You know, the brass manifold of the 3 plunger pump is much deeper. When making this upgrade, be sure to check the gap between the back of the pump and the engine housing. If you find that the water pump will rub against the crankcase cover of the engine, don’t rush to tighten the bolts, first pad a spacer plate (spacer plate).

After installation: avoid “air resistance” this fatal pit

If a new pump that has just been installed is choked with air in the brass manifold, it will be instantly scrapped when the first ignition is turned on. Because the ceramic plunger and rubber sealing ring inside the machine rely on water to cool and lubricate.

Listen up: first connect the garden hose to the newly installed pump and turn on the faucet. Don’t start the engine at this time. Just pull the trigger on the gun and hold it for two minutes. You will first hear the air “hissing” out, followed by a mixed “puff” of water vapor, until finally a steady, thick column of water is ejected.

This action is to empty the “air resistance” in the manifold. If you pull the starting rope without exhausting, the inside of the water pump will be dry-ground at an ultra-high speed of 3400 rpm. High temperature friction only takes 10 to 15 seconds to completely melt the rubber water seal, and then even the manufacturer will not give you a warranty.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Can I Buy Any Pump To Fit Into My Washing Machine?

Of course not. You must check the 3 hard indicators: the diameter of the engine spindle (usually 3/4 inch, 7/8 inch or 1 inch), the orientation of the spindle (vertical or horizontal), and the horsepower of the engine. If you force a 4000 PSI water pump to a small engine with a displacement of 160cc, you will have to shut down the engine as soon as you start it.

How To Judge Whether The Water Pump Of The Cleaning Machine Is Broken?

The symptoms of a broken pump are obvious: the pressure suddenly drops, the pump casing leaks water directly out, the oil in the observation window turns white and milky (indicating that the water seal has burst), or the sound of harsh metal friction during operation. If the unloading valve (unloader valve) is still under no pressure, the pump should be replaced.

Does The New Pump Come With Oil?

Most of the sealed axial cam pumps on the market are oiled at the factory and need not be replaced in this life. However, when the 3 plunger pump is sent, it usually comes with a transportation plug and a separate bottle of oil. Every time before starting a new pump, be sure to look at the observation window or pull out the dipstick to see; if the crankcase is dry, the bearings inside will be broken into slag instantly.

Which Side Should The Heat Relief Valve Face When Installed?

Align the heat relief valve with the ground, or at least avoid the exhaust muffler. As long as the machine idling for too long, this valve will discharge 140 degrees Fahrenheit (about 60 degrees) of hot water from the manifold. If the valve is facing the exhaust pipe and the water is sprayed directly on the red-hot metal, it will either deform the parts or burn people with high-temperature steam.

Why Is The New Pump Still Unable To Make Pressure?

The newly installed pump has no pressure for several reasons: the semicircular key fell out during installation (causing the spindle to turn blindly in the pump and did not drive the plunger at all), the unloading valve was adjusted too low, or the filter screen of the inlet pipe was blocked. In this case, the first thing is to check whether the spindle positioning key is installed or not.
