Can You Power Wash In The Rain

Blogs 300

The direct answer is: absolutely yes, and sometimes rain is actually a good thing.

That light drizzle is like a natural “pre-soak” that helps loosen even the toughest grime. As long as you pay attention to electrical safety and wear slip-resistant boots, you can actually be quite efficient working in the rain. If there’s lightning and thunder, or if it’s raining so hard you can’t see the road, we’d definitely have to stop work right away.

Why I Actually Enjoy Working On A Drizzly Day

Many people believe that washing up on a rainy day is a waste of effort, but rainwater can also be a great help:

  • The natural “pre-foaming” effect: A light rain is like a continuous, automatic sprinkler system. Before you pull the trigger, the bird droppings, moss, and decades-old grime on the wall have already been softened by the rain, making them much easier to wash away.
  • Preventing Cleaning Solutions from Drying Out: The biggest headache when working on a bright, sunny day is that the cleaning solution dries too quickly. Once the solution dries on the surface, unsightly white marks and streaks will be left behind. The humidity and moisture on a rainy day help keep the cleaner active for a longer period, allowing it to penetrate more deeply and deliver a more thorough clean.
  • Cleaning progress is clear at a glance: Many people may not realize that once a dry floor has completely dried after washing, it can be very difficult to tell where spots were missed. On rainy days the surface remains wet at all times, allowing you to clearly see the washed areas and ensuring even coverage.

Safety Details To Monitor When Working In The Rain

When working in the rain, you need to closely monitor these safety details. Although the rain is a helpful ally, it also poses real and tangible risks. Safety always comes first.

  • Electrical Safety (GFCI Required): If you are using an electric high-pressure washer, it must be plugged into a GFCI-protected outlet. As long as there is even a small leakage current, it can instantly cut off the power to save your life. Try to elevate the power strip so it doesn’t sit in a puddle of water.
  • Slip resistance and grip: Slippery surfaces, moss-covered patios, and soapy water. You must put on a pair of heavy-duty, non-slip boots.

When Must Work Be Forcibly Terminated?

No need to work during heavy rain

Not all rain is “good rain.” If you encounter any of the following situations, don’t hesitate—get out right away:

  • Thunder and lightning: As soon as you hear thunder, it means lightning is nearby. That long string of metal pipes on the high-pressure water cannon, along with the powerful jet of water it emits, is no joke.
  • Downpour: If the rain is so heavy that you can’t see the wall or ground in front of you, you won’t be able to control the water pressure accurately. It’s easy to overdo it and damage the wooden deck or the exterior siding.
  • The chemical solution is diluted: When we perform a “Soft Wash”, we rely on chemical agents to kill mold. If the rain is too heavy, the freshly applied pesticide will be washed away before it has time to take effect, which is simply a waste of both time and money.

Gas Engine Vs. Electric Motor

The gear you’re carrying determines how long you can last in the rain:

  • Gas-powered high-pressure washers: These machines are more rugged in rainy weather because they don’t have exposed high-voltage wiring. But need to be careful not to let water get into the fuel tank or the air filter.
  • Electric high-pressure washer: This type of machine requires you to remain highly vigilant. The motor housing is typically only splash-proof, not waterproof. If the rain is too heavy, the risk of water entering the internal components or of electrical leakage at the connectors will increase sharply.
