How To Operate A Power Washer

Blogs 4830

To operate a power washer, first, connect the garden hose and turn on the faucet fully, and then start the engine, this is the key to preventing the pump head from burning out. Secondly, select the nozzle. Generally speaking, the car wash with a green 25-degree nozzle, wash fragile siding on the white 40-degree nozzle, do not scrape the surface. The third step is to pull the trigger to “purge” and let the water flow through the barrel until the air inside is exhausted and the water flow is stable. The fourth step, start the motor (gasoline engine pull rope or motor switch), this time be sure to hold the boom with both hands. Finally, start cleaning. Keep the nozzle 6 to 12 inches away from the surface at a 45-degree angle, and use a long-distance, overlapping shooting action so that it does not leave unsightly streaks.

This video provides a beginner’s guide to using a pressure washer:

Step 1: Get The Water And Connections

In the code of practice of high-pressure cleaners, the most important one is to ensure that the water supply is stable before starting.

  • Check the water flow: see if your garden hose is knotted, and make sure it is firmly connected to the water inlet of the machine.
  • The “water first” principle: you must turn the faucet fully on. According to my observation of maintenance cases, even if the high-pressure pump is “dry-burned” for a few seconds, the heat generated by friction of internal parts is enough to cause permanent damage. The water flow is established first, which is actually providing the necessary lubrication and cooling to the pump.

Step 2: Select The Correct Nozzle According To The Surface

High-pressure cleaners distinguish spray angle and pressure intensity through color-coded nozzles. The consequences of choosing the wrong nozzle are very serious, either the wood is carved out or the concrete is cracked.

  • 25 degree green nozzle: This is your “golden oil” nozzle. It is very suitable for cleaning hard surfaces like concrete driveways, brick walkways and stone terraces. Its pressure is enough to lift the dirt without being too violent.
  • 40 degree white nozzle: This nozzle sprays a wider and gentler fan of water. This is the professional choice for delicate surfaces such as vinyl siding, painted fences or wooden decks. The purpose is to clean, not to peel or chisel the surface of the material.

Step 3: Drain Air From The System

Before starting the motor, you must “vent” the pump and hoses “. The air trapped in the system will cause the pressure to rise and fall, and this pressure spike can easily damage the internal sealing ring.

  • Exhaust process: At this time the faucet is on, but the motor is off. Pull the trigger on the gun and you will hear the air “puffing” out.
  • Wait for the water flow to stabilize: Continue to pull the trigger until the low-pressure water flow from the nozzle becomes consistent and stable. Once that “coughing” sound stops, your system is ready to press up.

Step 4: Start The Motor Safely

Whether you have a gasoline engine or an electric model in your hand, you need to keep your body stable during the start-up phase.

  • Deal with recoil: Even before the motor starts, make sure you have both hands on the boom. Once the pump is engaged, the high-pressure washer will give it a sharp “kick.
  • Start-up procedure: For gasoline models, set the choke and give the pull rope a stable and powerful pull. For electric type, make sure it is plugged into the grounding socket and turn on the switch. Remember, at this stage, the spray gun port must always point in a safe direction, away from people, pets, or fragile objects.

Step 5: Master The Cleaning Technique

Whether you can wash out the professional-level effect depends on your movement mode and position.

  • Distance and angle: Keep the nozzle approximately 6 to 12 inches (about 15-30cm) from the target surface. Maintain a 45-degree cut-in angle; based on experience, this angle helps the water to “shovel” the dirt away, rather than vertically pressing the dirt into the depths of the material.
  • Lancing action: Don’t stare at one point, it will leave a permanent mark. Instead, use a long-range, overlapping strafing action. Let every times of shooting slightly cover the edge of the first time, so as to eliminate the “tiger stripes” or streaks, and the washing effect will be uniform and professional.
